I haven’t done one of these for a while, so for those that don’t know, 80 Degrees is where we feature some of the best music from the 80′s (No matter what the genre). For the past couple of weeks me and Ramz have found ourselves falling in love with ‘Cult of Personality’ by Living in color once more. It was all thanks to WWE Star CM Punk, who used the song for his new entrance music. It had been years since I heard this song, and hearing it again made me remember how much of a classic the song it is.

The song was the first single from their debut album, Vivid, released in 1989. “Cult of Personality” reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 9 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. It also won the Grammy award for “Best Hard Rock Performance” in 1989. The band’s founder, Vernon Reid described the song as very special for the band not just for its commercial success but because it was essentially written in just one rehearsal session. The riff was stumbled upon while practicing something else and by the end of the session they had written what was to become Living Colour’s best known song. The song contains many political references, and shares its name with a phenomenon involving psychology and politics.

It’s been a while since I did an 80 Degrees, but I have been listening to a lot of 80′s music lately so I figured I would do this segment again so we can remember just how bubbly an 80′s song can make you feel on the inside. Get Down by Oliver Cheatham is a mandatory song to throw on Friday nights after work and Saturday mornings when you’re getting all the house work out the way so you can focus on the night ahead. This track is just legendary, and that’s why it has been remixed a dozen times. But I have a philosophy that the original is the best, or there wouldn’t be follow ups. Here is the original track below.

Never fear, Swiff Epics Is here. Bringing you the best 80′s music in my new segment 80 Degrees. When it comes to RnB, I am only really a fan of the old stuff from the 70′s-80′s. I feel like the music you hear today wasn’t as soulful as back then. This song was released the same year I was born, back in 1985. I love going back to hear what was popping back when I was swimming in my mothers belly.

Rick James is up there when it comes to soul legends. So don’t sleep on Rick James BITCH! This song is from his album Glow, and it is by far my favorite joint from there. Enjoy.
