Jesse Abraham is different to the typical New York MC you are used to hearing. He was born in Manhattan, grew up in TriBeCa and later moved to Brooklyn, raised on the city’s hip-hop culture and the eight-track tapes his parents introduced him to as a youngster. He describes his music as an expression of love and happiness. When I heard Jesse’s stuff I thought it would be great to take a look into his story, his message and his life-style. Hip Hop has become a huge expression for artists, it’s a way of life but at the same time allows you to add you’re own take on the art-forms associated with it.

With that being said, I managed to take up some of Jesse’s time for this exclusive interview. If you like to listen to something fresh, then definitely see what he brings to the table.

——

TEN(The Epic Network): I’ve read over your biography, but let our readers know your story, where you came from and how you came to be involved with music.

Jesse Abraham: My story is relatively simple, as I was raised by a couple of teachers who championed the notion of expression and original thought. I grew up in lower Manhattan in the early 80′s, and am in many ways a reflection of this particular place and time. Hip-hop was the first genre of music I ever heard, and I started participating in it as soon as I could – breakdancing when I was four or five, writing rhymes & recording songs when I was like eight or nine. I’ve gone through many phases in my life, but hip-hop has been the most consistent. I was in a few rap groups and weirdo bands in college, and I’ve always been writing and recording tracks on the regular, but it was really in ’09 that I started taking emceeing seriously, putting out material and rocking shows. Since then it’s been an exquisite expansion and an audible awakening.

TEN: Your sound is original, and different to what people would expect from a Hip Hop artist originating from Brooklyn. How would you describe your sound?

Jesse: My sound is one that cannot escape itself. It’s an expression of love and happiness, yet simultaneously one that allows for consideration of all emotions and thoughts. Generally, I aim to inspire. whether it be fondness, disapproval, laughter or joy that is the response to my music, I’m in search of a genuine reaction. I reach out with the truest parts of who I am, aiming for the most sincere portion of every listener. My sound is sincere & innovative. It’s who I am.

TEN: That’s something I respect about your music, the originality and sincerity behind it. Not everybody can be that true to themselves in the music industry. Is there a specific group of people you like to appeal to, or do you generally try and make your music accessible to anyone?

Jesse: My goal with making music is to reach as many ears as possible. While staying true to myself as a writer, as well as remaining a fan of original art, I aim to make my music as accessible as possible. The more the merrier.

TEN: Your single Spiderman On Vitamins made major waves throughout the web (pun?) – tell us the idea behind this song.

Jesse: Ha you put a nice spin on the title there, well done. Spiderman on Vitamins is a transparently autobiographical journey through my relationship with hip-hop. It also acts as a bit of a parody of braggadocious rap, as I play off of the idea of how potent I am as an entity on this earth. It’s a banger, with a smile. Shouts to Spills.

TEN: You’re also heavily involved in the production side of things, how would you describe your sound?

Jesse: I would describe my production sound as amateur & intuitive. I started making beats out of necessity, at a time when I was just making my way away from rhyming in live bands and more towards a traditional emcee/producer experience. But I had yet to run into many producers who I felt were sonically inventive in the way I would have preferred, and I never even considered spitting over industry beats. So, using GarageBand and absolutely no technical production knowledge, I began making my own tracks. I pumped out about 100 before I started working with real producers. Then I promptly stopped. Now I’m GarageBanned.

TEN: Which artists have you been excited to work with in the studio thus far?

Jesse: Every opportunity I’ve had to work with other emcees has been a blessing. I’m always excited to mold styles & perspectives, and I learn something from everyone’s energy. Ranging from homies of mine like PremRock or Homeboy Sandman to heads who I met in the studio for the first time like Blu or Marquis Daniels, a team effort is always an exciting endeavor.

TEN: We hear you’re a managing director for a tutoring company, can you tell us a little about that?

Jesse: I started working as a freelance tutor in 2004, and within a few years I had accumulated too many students to handle on my own. So I co-founded Hartman Tutoring in ’06, and it’s been my means to munching ever since. We’re a small Manhattan-based company specializing in test-prep, but we work with all ages. As far as jobs go, it’s a dream come true. It’s hard work, and I take my tutoring career very seriously – but it’s good fun all around, yes indeed. I learn and smile a lot. It’s a lot like emceeing.

TEN: Who are some of your biggest influences in Hip Hop?

Jesse: Literally every feature of life that I experience becomes a hip-hop influence for me. Converse hi-tops, Baroque architecture, Michael Adams, stalled subways, Roxbury Crossing, botched robbery attempts, unintentional dreadlocks, organic Pop-Tarts, Marky Mark, athlete’s foot, Canal St, Quanah Parker, ants. Hip-hop is everywhere and anywhere. But yeah, most of Def Jam’s catalog from the 80′s and what was going on in Atlanta in the mid-90′s had a huge impact on me. And Baba Ram Dass.

TEN: What are your thoughts on the state of Hip Hop right now?

Jesse: The hip-hop I know is doing pretty awesomely. Unique artists & thoughtful concepts are everywhere, and my peoples are ascending through noble means. It’s a prolific era. I don’t know much about what gets played on the radio & what’s in magazines, so hip-hop to me is what’s around me. What’s around me is dopeness.

TEN: What are some of the upcoming projects you plan to work on?

Jesse: I’m about to put out a new music video, which will come equipped with a free live album, recorded at the legendary Southpaw in Brooklyn. My next full-length album will be dropping this Spring/Summer. I’m also trying to finish up this little garden I have in my backyard. Then after that I have a straightup banger mixtape, and a little concept album in the works.

TEN: Ideally where would you like to be as an artist in the next three years?

Jesse: Three years from now I will be celebrating the 3-year anniversary of completing this illustrious interview. I imagine I will have completed the projects previously listed, pushed myself and my music towards numerous countries, progressed a bit, and hopefully organized that underground hip-hop basketball tournament I’ve been talking about doing for years. Learning, laughing & loving is my plan. I will endure.

TEN: This is your chance to give any plugs or shoutouts

Jesse: Shouts to all beings of courage and humor, who make a difference, inside and out. Lookout for water in 2012. Hype riddy.

We had been asking the question time and time again: “When is Missy Elliot returning to the music scene?” And it seems this year we’re not far off seeing the return of one of the most talented female rappers around. Missy Elliot, alongside frequent collaborator Timbaland, will both make a return releasing their albums in June this year, with the former nearly becoming “Detox related” after there was no signs to Missy Elliot’s sequel to her 2005 release of “The Cookbook”, whilst the latter last released his album in 2009 with “Shock Value II”…

Speaking to MTV News, Timbaland confirmed: Me and Missy are both coming with our albums at the same time, and it will be in June. “Right now, we’re preparing to get both our videos, our first singles, shot kinda at the same time. We want to do it as a movement and spontaneously.”

To release a single spontaneously would have been not to confirm that you are recording one in the first place. Nonetheless, both Missy and Timbaland have continued to produce music between solo projects, with the duo most-notably last together on a collaboration with Demi Levato’s “All Night Long” from the singer’s 2011 album “Unbroken.”

He continues in mentioning: “I just don’t want to move too ahead of her and she don’t want to move too ahead of me,” explained Timbaland. “So we’re both doing it at the same time.” Aw…

For our American fans, checkout the interview below. For our UK fans you’re just going to have to take our word that we will indeed see the return of Missy Elliot this year. Excited? Let us know:

This story isn’t exactly untold, as I’ve heard Whoo Kid spill the beans on it a couple times. It’s a hilarious story nonetheless. It was back when the late Big Pun was beefing with Jay-Z, and Whoo Kid leaked a diss record from Source Money (A Roc-A-Fella affiliate) going at Big Pun. With the pressure on Pun, he decided to set up Whoo Kid by luring him out to Harlem by making him think he was going to score a huge sum of money from a promoter, when in fact he would meet the barrel of Pun’s Uzi.

Listen to Whoo Kid tell the story himself below.

A lot can be said about Young Money’s artist Drake, who in recent times has been in a heated beef with Chicago’s Common, and in our case definitely coming out losing against the professional rapper. After Common said his part on the “Stay Schemin’” remix he went on to say he has moved on, with nothing more to say unless provoked otherwise by Drake himself. This has prompted Drake to also reply that he too, has nothing to say on the beef, though we’ve all heard this before from a Young Money artist…

Speaking to Nah Right, Drake mentioned wouldn’t record another diss track towards Common, saying instead that this was all done because he used the beef to promote his latest album, “The Dreamer, The Believer.” quoted to say: despite how it’s been worded by him that situation is not a ‘hip hop moment’ or a ‘battle for the sake of musical integrity’…it’s a ploy for attention around the release of an album, more than anything it was just disappointing cause what kid isn’t a fan of what Common has done for our genre. A guy who made such an incredible career for himself based off expressing genuine feelings about life and love is now targeting me for sharing my story.”

With Drake likely ignoring real reasons to why the beef was started in the first place, he moved on to discussing his plans for a tour this year as well as he has already started recording new music.

“I have begun working on new music already and I’ll be recording during the whole college tour with 40. Making better music and building myself as a business is all that’s on my mind. Hopefully some acting as well.”

So the beef has ended, for now. Time and time again we hear an artist from Young Money/Cash Money weasel their way out of a beef only to then intentionally go back in and deny themselves, so it would not be surprising if Drake has a few extra words to say about the Chi-town legend upon new music releases. Whatever the case, let us know your thoughts and opinions on this situation.

In part 3 of his interview with This Is 50′s Jack Thriller, Prodigy gives some tips on how he’s survived for so long with Sickle Cell. As someone who has Sickle Cell myself, I can tell you first hand how much of a burden the disease can be. Nobody truly understands the pain that is felt from a Sickle Cell crisis, and it’s hard to even articulate. When I was younger it would have been considered lucky for a Sickle Cell sufferer to make it passed 30 years old, so it’s definitely a blessing that Prodigy and other sufferers have been able to live with it so long.

A press conference in Tokyo, Japan was held featuring the stars plus team behind Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Included [...]

A press conference in Tokyo, Japan was held featuring the stars plus team behind Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Included amongst the panel were Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), alongside produce Avi Arad and Marc Webb himself, discussing a few expectations of the movie as well as hyping an announcement that Spider-Man will be first launched in Japan before any other territory on 30th June this year…

Amidst build up to the movie, producer Avi Arad described the “The Amazing Spider-Man” as a more human approach to the superhero compared to Sam Raimi’s trilogy. He went to say: “In our movie, [Peter] finds his true love, Gwen Stacy was always the true love of Peter Parker… We found a very, very good story about what makes a human being. About what sets their destiny.”

With the press and fans in attendance they were also shown a special footage, to which actor Andrew Garfield emphasized: “As you can see, a lot of the stunts are practical and grounded in reality. That was something that Marc, the director, really wanted to make sure happened in this movie to set it apart from previous ones… I would exhaust myself every day and get into near-death experiences every hour on the hour… I collaborated with [the stunt team] not only on the big stunt set-pieces but also on what happens to Peter’s body when he gets bitten. What happens to his DNA and how that effects the way he moves and the way he interacts with objects. The idea that he has spider DNA running in his system. What that will do to his sense of space. What that will do to the sensitivity of his skin. To have an opportunity to play in that forum with creative and talented people was a real opportunity and gift.”

The group went on to explain the two additions to the movie, with Rhys Ifans to play as Dr. Connors and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, who sets her role apart from the Gwen Stacy played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3 by saying “We haven’t even met Mary Jane at this point,” leaving that to be deciphered however way possible for hardcore fans.

Talking more about the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, and whether the ‘iconic kiss’ from the first trilogy will be ever replicated between then new two, Emma Stone replied: “You don’t want to know! You want to watch the movie and find out. Plus, it would be weird if we were like, ‘There’s something iconic coming up!’ You’ve got to decide if it’s iconic or not. But there is a nice first kiss and it’s different than the upside down one. And we liked it.”

Regards to Dr. Connors, Avi Arad steps in again to say: “We introduce our villain, Dr. Connors, and in the great tradition of Marvel, Dr. Connors is going to be connected to Peter Parker and, in our case even more interesting, to Gwen Stacy. Right there, the challenge of having to deal with a villain who is a mentor and the only one who you can look at and say, ‘So what really happened to my dad?’ That’s a very hard person to fight.”

Much, much more can be viewed in the video below, where the full conference is roughly nearly an hour of watching.

Opening domestically on 3rd July this year, “The Amazing Spider-Man” stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans and more. Directed by Marc Webb, let us know your thoughts and expectations.

Part 3 of DJ Whoo Kid‘s untold stories with Jack Thriller is about when Whoo Kid almost walked right into a trap set up by Suge Knight. Back in 2003 50 Cent’s popularity was soaring, and Whoo Kid leaked a new Tupac song which 50 Cent had added his vocals to. Suge Knight was upset about this and also had a running beef with 50 Cent and his camp, so he tried to set a trap by having 50′s camp sent out to do a show on the West. Whoo Kid handled the show, but what Suge Knight didn’t know was that 50 Cent was not in attendance.

Things got ugly and the situation ended with a gang of Suge’s goons coming at the G-unit camp with knives, whilst Whoo Kid’s camp was armed with just a single gun. Thankfully the cops broke up the situation before anything regretful could happen, and Suge Knight and 50 Cent managed to defuse the whole thing over a phone call.

Listen to Whoo Kid tell it below.

Many say he’s bluffing, many more seem to not care so much, but speaking with the New York Times George [...]

Many say he’s bluffing, many more seem to not care so much, but speaking with the New York Times George Lucas announced that he would be retiring from making “blockbuster movies” and instead focus back towards creating personal films. With George saying that we imagine he stars his Star Wars toys and putting them on focus through one camera describing the variation of different endings he wished to have made upon the movies…

In all serious talk; Lucas was speaking on behalf of his latest project “Red Tails”, a WW2 drama pic which stars Ne-Yo (no judging), which he described the difficulties of actually getting the movie picked up and made.

“I can’t make that [kind of] movie,” he complained. “I’m going to have make this kind of… entertainment movie. [So] I’m retiring. I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.”

The newspaper was quick to note that the 67-yearl old director was careful to leave himself an out clause for a fifth “Indiana Jones” film, with producer Rick McCallum adding: “Once this is finished, he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to do, he will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker.”

So the reasoning to wanting to retire now? It mainly seems due to tiredness from bickering fans, as George Lucas had some words for those accusing him of constantly tinkering with the Star Wars franchise.

“On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie. I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.’

“Why would I make any more,” he adds, “when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?”

Clearly feeling a little touchy, it seems only logical for the director to devote the rest of his life to ‘personal films.’ as The Times describe it: “They’ll be small in scope, esoteric in subject and screened mostly in art houses. They’ll be like the experimental movies Lucas made in the 1960s, around the time he was at U.S.C. film school, when he recorded clouds moving over the desert and made a movie based on an E. E. Cummings poem.”

So, we ask you, what do you have to say for yourselves!? Apparently this has been said before, so whether we take this serious or not is yet to be clear. Be it cruel or sympathetic, let us know your thoughts.

In a recent interview with Kevin W. Reese on Hot 93.7, Papoose discussed the benefits of going the independent route.

“A record label’s not stopping you from paying for your own studio time…pressing up your own CD, and selling it to the people,” explained Pap. “The more you do it, the more notoriety you will gain as you go along. You’re not gonna start at the top, but eventually, if you keep doing it and be consistent, you’ll get there.”

“There’s a lot of advantages to being independent. You make your own money, and make the music of your choice.”

Papoose also chimed in on Drake and Common’s beef, but he sat on the fence instead of choosing a side in the beef.
