The director of Marvel’s American Super Soldier ‘The First Avenger: Captain America’ spoke with LA Times during Comic-Con discussing on how Steve Rogers (Capt. America) will come off in the movie.
In reply, Joe Johnston says that the screen version of the hero will be true to his roots up to a certain point, going on to say that Rogers will not be a full on die hard ‘flag waver’.
He goes to say: “We’re sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers,” said Joe Johnston, “He’s a guy that wants to serve his country but he’s not a flag-waver. We’re reinterpretating sort of what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was.”
“He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver,” Johnston added. “He’s just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don’t change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier, you have to stay who you are inside, that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything. It’ll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate.”
This has a few people a bit miffed about what to expect of the American hero, majority saying that Captain America represented patriotism, and Hollywood just doesn’t get that. Whereas others will say ‘stop being a redneck’ or ‘get with the times man’. Checkout the full interview here
My opinion – too quick to judge. It is not even much of a surprise, as the full article states – Batman excludes Robin and dives in a more grim outlife that Christopher Nolan wanted to portray. If Batman isn’t convincing enough (seeing as he is a dark moody gloom at times as it is), Jon Favreau did excellent work along with Robert Downey Jr. in creating a certain persona for Tony Stark and Iron Man.
But, those are my words, give us your thoughts – Think Captain America/Steve Rogers will be handled alright?
