A mother, father, a lady, superhero and now a villain in Zack Snyder’s attempt to reboot DC’s flagship hero “Superman: Man Of Steel”, as Michael Shannon has been given the role of popular bad guy General Zod…

Originally this role was offered to Viggo Mortensen, who was unable to find a gap in his schedule to commit to the superhero reboot. I always feel that an actor/actress receiving a role because the first choice star could not get one is quite…insulting really. I mean giving roles away without the person having to audition is fair enough, but to have a list of people like that must start some sort of ego war. Nonetheless Michael Shannon (TV’s “Boardwalk Empire”, “Vanilla Sky”) has a weird face, as well as a great actor which was seemingly perfect if Viggo’s face could not portray General Zod.

In a statement released by Zack Snyder himself, he goes to say: “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t.

“Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

If you say so! Michael Shannon is someone very interesting and seemingly does deliver a mystery of character for roles we’ve seen him in (I personally think he’s peculiar in a good way when watching him on Boardwalk Empire). No doubt he can pull off something hopefully as memorable as Terence Stamp’s famous version of Zod in the original “Superman II” movie.

The film has built it’s formidable cast and can only grow furthermore. Set for December 2012, we cannot wait what to expect from Zack Snyder. Let us know however what you think – Think Michael Shannon as Zod is a good choice? Think Zod is even worth pitting as the bad guy right now?
